C.W. Robertson Custom Design Process
- STEP 1: Concept.
The majority of the furniture that I make is custom designed in collaboration with my clients. Each custom piece begins as a discussion of woods, color, grain, style and function. Typically, a client will provide a description of what they are looking to have made as well as a few rough dimensions. Providing good pictures of pieces that represent the style and look you are after can be invaluable. Unless you are looking to recreate a specific piece, I will typically open up my furniture library and bring examples of various furniture styles into our discussion in order to gauge your personal tastes. I have an extensive library of furniture books and these examples allow us to nail down the specific elements of design that appeal to your sense of style. - STEP 2: Drawing.
Once I have a grasp on your style sense, as well as the function that the piece will serve, I will do a scaled pencil drawing of my proposal. This drawing will come with an estimate for the total cost of the piece - materials and labor - and should you feel good about the design, a deposit of 1/3 the labor plus the materials saves your spot on the waiting list. I will be sure to inform you of the estimated wait and will contact you when the build starts.
- STEP 3: Build.
The build can take several weeks or several months depending on the project. I will provide you with pictures of the piece as it is progressing via email and invite you to come into the shop and see the progress for yourself. I believe that getting a look into the “ behind the scenes” aspects of furniture making gives my clients an appreciation for the craftsmanship involved and adds to the fun of custom furniture.
- STEP 4: Shipping.
Should you live out of State your piece will be carefully packaged to insure safe delivery and shipped to you at the cost of the freight carrier. I will personally deliver pieces within a certain radius of my shop and help you get the piece safely placed in your home.
